The Belding Police Department provides 24 hour police service, as well as dispatching fire and emergency medical services. Currently, the authorized staffing level includes 1 Chief, 2 Sergeants, 6 Patrol officers. In addition the department has 14 Reserve officers, a code enforcement officer and a school crossing guard. The Dispatch Center is staffed by 2 full-time and 5 part-time dispatchers.
The full-time sworn officers of the department perform traffic enforcement, ordinance enforcement, accident and criminal investigations and general patrol activity. They also perform community related programs, vacation house checks, bike patrol, child safety seat inspections, vehicle inspections, school safety talks and classroom visits.
The department also provides a Police Explorer Program, which provides a law enforcement experience to high school age students.
The Police Reserve program is a valuable asset to the Belding police department and the community. The Police Reserve provides security at school functions, athletic events and community programs. Reserve officers also ride along with sworn officers for extra assistance during high service periods. Reserves sponsor a Bicycle Rodeo in May each year and a senior citizen dinner during the holidays.
Duties
Belding Police officers are multifunctional officers who are trained and experienced in handling almost any police related situation that occurs in the city. Some of the basic responsibilities include general patrol for the purpose of traffic enforcement ,prevention and detection of crimes or hazardous situations. Police officers are sworn to enforce city ordinance, state law, federal law. Officers respond to calls for service that include both criminal and non-criminal matters. Department members investigate crimes, accidents, and city ordnance code violations. Many code violations and animal complaints are handled by the code enforcement officer.
Belding Police Officers are responsible for the apprehension of criminals and wanted individuals. Members of the department routinely respond to non-criminal matters such as child custody, property, and other situations where police are called to keep the peace.
The safety and protection of the citizens of Belding is paramount for the department, and we continue to train and prepare for the challenges of the 21st century. Community-oriented police officers help us to achieve our goals and make the community proud of their police department.
Code Enforcement
The Code Enforcement Officer is involved in the detection and identification of situations that affect the quality of life for residents of the city. The focus of the enforcement is directed at the following items; tall grass (10 in. +), stagnate swimming pools, junk inoperable vehicles, animals, and many other issues that effect the quality of life for our residents.

Citizens Patrol Now Forming
A volunteer Citizens Patrol is being organized to help reduce and prevent crime in the City of Belding. Primary tasks will be to provide crime deterrence through high visibility patrol, report in progress crimes and document suspicious persons and/or unsafe conditions within the assigned patrol area. Two of the mountain bikes were donated to the department and the animal control pickup truck was from a drug forfeiture.
House and Vacation Watch
Officers will periodically inspect vacant homes upon request. Notifying the police department also provides us with a way to contact you or another designated person if there is a problem at your home. If you are leaving town for an extended time please contact us by phone in person, by mail or fax. You will be required to complete a vacation check form (download). The form is also available at our office.
